The Foreign Reporting module is both a theoretical and practical module aimed at providing Journalism and/ or Communication students with the conceptual framework and the practical skills needed to work as a foreign reporter on assignment. The module emphasizes international journalism, multiculturalism and ethnicity.
Exchange students staying the whole autumn term can choose additional classes up to 30 ECTS even if they do not take part in the minor.
The Foreign Reporting module consists of four courses:
ETHNICITY, REPRESENTATION AND THE MEDIA, 5 ECTS
This course will explore the role of the media in impacting upon personal identities and framing the politics of diversity in contemporary societies. Drawing upon mass communication research, cultural studies and social psychology the course will examine the means whereby the mass media may be partisan and biased in their representation of ethnic identities.
INTERNATIONAL JOURNALISM, 5 ECTS
The course discusses the international news flows as documented in the flow studies since the 1950s. Further the course focuses on the dominant modes of journalism and their journey across cultures and national borders. Guest lectures and visits to media institutions will help to sharpen the view on the role of news journalism in present-day world.
FOREIGN CORRESPONDENCE IN PRACTICE, 6 ECTS
The course includes theory and practice of foreign reporting, using Finland as a laboratory environment. An intensive introduction to the target area (Baltic States with emphasis on Estonia) is provided before starting the practical assignment. The students travel to Estonia on a working assignment which will result in a report for newspaper, radio or television.
INTEGRATIVE COURSE, 4 ECTS
The aim of the course is to engage in a reflective examination of the learning process and the newly acquired competences through a shared practical experience. Students carry out a final practical assignment before reviewing the contents and implications of the Foreign Reporting module.
A compulsory orientation course for international students is organized at the start of term in the end of August/ beginning of September.
The module has no tuition fee.
16-18 students of Journalism and/ or Communication are recruited through an admission process. Students are recruited nationally and internationally from the partner universities of the Swedish School of Social Science. Application opens 1st March, deadline: 15th May 2016 (EU), 15th of April (outside of EU)
