|prof. dr. sc. Željko Holjevac|
Željko Holjevac was born on December 15, 1973 in Brinje. He studied history at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Zagreb, where in 2006 he obtained the academic degree of Doctor of Science with the dissertation Croatian-Hungarian Relations 1860-1873. From 1998 to 2007 he worked as an assistant at the Ivo Pilar Institute of Social Sciences in Zagreb. From 2007 to 2019 he was employed at the Department of History of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Zagreb as an assistant professor, associate, and full professor. From 2014 to 2016, he was vice dean for organization and development, and acad. year 2016/2017 and Interim Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. Since March 25, 2019, he has been the director of the Ivo Pilar Institute of Social Sciences.
He deals with Croatian history of the Early Modern Period as well as modern and contemporary Croatian history in the European context. He has spent several research years abroad, working mostly in archives and libraries in Vienna and Budapest. He is the President of the Society for Croatian History, the Head of the Department of History as well as a member of the Main Board of Matica hrvatska and a member of the Organizing Committee of the International Cultural and Historical Symposium Mogersdorf. He was the President of the State Commission for Competitions of Primary and Secondary School Students of the Republic of Croatia in History (2007-2013). Since October 28, 2019, he has been a member and co-chairman of the Croatian-Slovak Commission for the Humanities.
As a visiting professor, he lectured at the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Split (summer semester 2006/2007), the Faculty of Teacher Education, University of Zagreb (2009-2011) and the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Pécs (winter semester 2013/2014). As an external collaborator, he now teaches elective courses at the Faculty of Croatian Studies, University of Zagreb and the Croatian Catholic University. He participates in scientific conferences and collaborates in scientific journals and other publications on various historical topics. He has organized two international conferences and several domestic ones. As an author or co-author, he has published several books and a lot of scientific articles, edited several proceedings, and tried his hand at writing history textbooks for primary and secondary schools. From 2009 to 2019, he popularized Croatian historical topics in the monthly Matica, published by the Croatian Heritage Foundation.
